“Come on,” Cheryl said, quickly taking me by the arm as the sound of the bike grew closer. “Let’s get you inside.”
“He…he followed me?” I said, more to myself than to Cheryl as we got up and headed back inside. The sound of the engine grew closer and closer and I saw the headlights shine on the branches of the trees as Cheryl ushered me through the door.
“Stay there!” she hissed. “I’ll take care of him.”
Before I could respond, she closed the door and marched back out into the parking lot just as Jason pulled up on his bike.
I put a hand on my chest in an attempt to quiet my heart as I set eyes on him again. He was gorgeous, which only made me even angrier. Despite the fact that he’d betrayed me, left me on my own for a year without any explanation, I still couldn’t stop my body from reacting to him.
I watched through the window as Cheryl raised her hand to him and he slowed the bike to a stop in front of her. He said something to her…
“Where is she?” That’s what it looked like.
Cheryl shook her head and crossed her arms like a disapproving mother. She was saying something to him, but with her back to me, I couldn’t tell what. Whatever it was, Jason didn’t like it.
He shook his head back and started speaking quickly—too quickly for me to read his lips. I caught a word here and there: no, back, tell her, tonight.
But Cheryl wasn’t having any of it. She just kept shaking her head, and when Jason started to get fired up, pointed behind him to the road, obviously telling him to leave.
My heart was slamming in my chest. I shook my hands at my sides as though that would do something to rid me of the terrible anxiety that had taken hold of me. I still couldn’t really believe that it was him out there.
I glanced behind me at Kevin, Jason’s child, soundly asleep with absolutely no idea that his long-lost father was just outside. Then again, Kevin didn’t even know he had a father. He was just a baby, and as far as I was concerned up until now, he never would know who his father was.
First of all, I never expected to see Jason again, and if I did, I certainly wasn’t going to introduce his son to a man who could just up and leave at any second. That would just be cruel. After having lived with a basically absent father myself, I was never going to put my son through anything similar.
I glanced back outside. Jason still hadn’t left and looked like he was about to just push past Cheryl and come barging into my apartment. He leaned his bike down on his kickstand and motioned to one side, pointing to some scratch marks which undoubtedly had come from when I’d knocked it over.
I almost felt bad about that…almost.
He tried to step past Cheryl, but she moved in front of him and held her hands up like a police officer.
